Apple and Tesla reportedly met to discuss a deal that could clear the way for a Cupertino-designed iCar.

The San Francisco Chronicle suggested that Apple and Tesla met last year to discuss a possible link-up.

Citing an unnamed source, it claimed Apple's merger and acquisitions chief, Adrian Perica, met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk in October.

Although neither company has commented on the rumours, Apple has long been interested in cars. It filed a number of patents for automobile-related stuff, including a touchy-feely dashboard-mounted fondleslab and a device to stop fanbois from losing their vehicle inside a car park. Apple is also interested in developing technology to predict heart attacks by analysing the sound of blood as it rumbles around a patient's arteries, the Chronicle continued.

Apple lovers and investors alike would like to see it regain its entrepreneurial spirit.

In October last year, German investment bank analyst Adnaan Ahmad wrote an open letter to Tim Cook calling on him to snap up Tesla.

"I know this is radical and potentially 'transformative' but this would radically alter Apple's growth profile," he wrote. "In Elon Musk, you could strike up a partnership and obtain a new iconic partner to lead Apple's innovation drive," said the Berenberg exec.
