Contractors working for Apple have begun pulling down buildings in preparation for the construction of the fruity firm's mammoth new HQ.

The Apple Campus II, which we've dubbed The Fruit Loop, is a huge new building which will dock right in the centre of Cupertino City.

Pictures of the work have been circulating on Apple blogs and show workmen putting up a (fruity? No. You're not calling it a fruity fence – Vulture Central's backroom gremlins) fence around the construction site.

Demolition has begun within the parcel of land that Apple purchased in 2006. Observers can no longer see the portion of the site which used to belong to HP, which is expected to be turned into a leafy bower of bliss for Apple employees to gambol around.

The 2.8 million sq ft glass building will eventually house more than 12,000 staff. It features a gym and canteen, which should mean Apple's iDrones can work until they drop without having to leave the office.

Cupertino City Council gave the Fruit Loop its unanimous backing, as long as Apple agrees to pay more taxes. ®
