Flabbergasted investigators say that a previously unknown, very exciting Brazilian pussy was right under their noses but they have only just realised it.

Full details of the discovery have just been published in graphic detail in a specialist magazine.

According to a press release issued to highlight the event:

The discovery is a reminder of just how little scientists still know about the natural world, even when it comes to such charismatic creatures.

One of the scientists who revealed the charismatic creature in question to an excited world is Eduardo Eizirik of Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul.

"Our study highlights the need for urgent attention focused on the Brazilian northeastern tigrinas, which are virtually unknown with respect to most aspects of their biology," enthuses the avid researcher.

In essence, it had been thought that the "tigrinas"* of Brazil were all of one kind, but in fact the northeastern ones are quite different from the southerners.

Eizirik and his colleagues write in the specialist mag Current Biology:

We demonstrate that two seemingly continuous Brazilian tigrina populations show no evidence of ongoing gene flow between them, leading us to support their formal recognition as distinct species, namely L. tigrinus in the northeast and L. guttulus in the south.

"We need to understand as much as possible regarding their genetics, ecology, and evolution to be able to design adequate conservation strategies," says Tatiane Trigo of Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, who also worked on the study. ®
