Three journalists who worked on the UK newsstand publication Linux Format have struck out on their own and are using crowdfunding to get a new magazine off the ground.

Less than a week into their Indiegogo campaign, Andrew Gregory, Mike Saunders and Ben Everard are already a third of the way to reaching the £90,000 launch budget for Linux Voice.

The team has come up with some interesting twists that should play well to the Linux heartlands:

We feel that Linux Voice isn't just a new magazine, but a new style of magazine that puts its readers and community ahead of profit, while at the same time, not compromising on quality.

1) We will put 50% of our profits back into the community.
2) We aim to make all of our content available under a creative commons licence after nine months.
3) We will serve only our readers, not shareholders or a board of directors.

Also it is interesting that Andrew, Mike and Ben think there is a living to be had from a printed computer magazine - this is publishing but not as we know it, Jim.

But then again the guys don’t need to sell that many copies to make a fist of it. Their previous billet Linux Format had an ABC circulation of 21,784 – and the overheads that come with being part of a big company (in this case, Future Publishing).

So, The Register offers our best wishes to Linux Voice. You can join the party and find out more at Linux Voice’s Indigogo page or @linuxvoice. ®
