Samsung slips out slim spinner with surprisingly sizable storage supply
Two terabytes tamped into tiny two-incher

Seagate’s Samsung subsidiary has launched a 2TB mobile drive, claiming it to be the world’s thinnest 2TB drive.
The Samsung Spinpoint MT9 comes in 1.5TB and 2TB versions and has, we understand from Storage Review, three platters, meaning 667GB/platter areal density.
Competitors like WD/HGST and Toshiba will either have to go to 1TB/platter in their 2-platter mobile device drives or cram a third platter into their 9.5mm thick cases.
Dave Frankovich, Samsung HDD senior product line manager, said the product has "the highest areal density shipping in a single storage device".
Samsung says the drive has microactuation "to ensure fast, consistent hard drive performance". Technologies branded as NoiseGuard and SilentSeek technologies give it "ultra-quiet operation" Samsung says.
It spins at 5,400rpm, has a 32MB cache and is accessed through a 6Gbit/s SATA interface. The product is offered for internal and external use to OEMs, channel system integrators and consumers.
