California-based Connected Data’s Transporter, which turns an external disk into a private cloud for your devices, is helping you hook up with your like-minded friends.

It now links to other Transporters so you can set up your own private cloud for your friends, relatives and/or business colleagues. The new capability is limited to a single disk, for the moment, we guess, and files are sync'n'shared between Transporters.

Mobile phone and tablet access has been supported and now, with the Transporter Sync product, files held on them can be synced'n'shared with other Transporter users. A Transporter costs £89 and you need to buy a USB external disk drive to put in it. There are no recurring fees.

As Connected Data and Drobo have merged we are waiting for – indeed, hoping for – a Drobo-style product capable of transporting data, complete with file sync'n'share capability added.

Transporter Sync will be available from Amazon UK, Dabs, Transparent and Expansys in time for Christmas. ®
