Google’s LG-made, plastic-backed Nexus 5 smartphone, possibly one of the most leaked as-yet-unannounced handsets ever, will be available in white as well as black, as yet another leak has revealed.

The Nexus 5 - of either hue - will contain a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon chip running at up to 2.3GHz and equipped with 2GB of RAM to play around with, as well as a 4.95-inch, 1920 x 1080 display to draw pictures on.

There’s nothing particularly impressive about that spec - confirmed through a, yes, leaked service manual - so the real interest in the Nexus 5 lies in the fact that it will run the next major version of Android, 4.4 Kit-Kat.

The basic model, boasting 16GB of on-board storage, will cost $349 (£215), it was recently revealed – not by a leak, but by a Chocolate Factory cock-up that saw the device briefly added to the Google Play website.

But other leaks suggest it will go on sale this coming Friday, 1 November.

The LTE-connected Nexus 5’s choice of colours seems decidedly conservative in comparison with Apple’s rainbow range of iPhone 5Cs, though if the rumours that the latter aren’t selling so well are to be believed perhaps Google and LG are right to follow the very well-trodden monochrome path.

But are the rumours correct? Apple has yet to provide any guidance on 5C sales, of course, but The Register’s own, loosely scientific measure - “how often do you spot a given device on the London Underground” - has shown a marked increased in 5C sightings over the past week or so.

Google and LG will undoubtedly be hoping to supplant the 5C with their own offering - whenever it finally gets an official unveiling and release date. ®
