HTC's chief executive has delegated some of his operational duties to his company's chairwoman and co-founder so he can concentrate on reviving the firm's smartphone business.

CEO Peter Chou is stepping back from some of his tasks in sales, marketing and supplier relationships so that he can focus on product development, the Financial Times reported.

“I have become very focused in the past couple of months. Before that I was too busy,” said Chou. “I took on too many things. I need to be more focused on innovation and [the] product portfolio.”

HTC has been enduring a slow topple from the top of the smartphone heap, joining mobile-makers like Nokia and BlackBerry, which were once the cream of the mobile crop, at the bottom of the list.

Chou has handed over some of his brief to the firm's long-serving chairwoman Cher Wang, who placed 56th in the Forbes “100 most powerful women” list last year.

The company's last quarterly result featured a larger than expected loss and the first since it started selling its own brand of phones. The firm's market share has dropped from around 11 per cent two years ago to just 2.6 per cent today, according to beancounters at Canalys. ®
