Half of all American iOS users have now updated to the latest operating system, analysts have claimed, while Apple itself reckons 200 million devices worldwide are now running iOS 7.

Just a week after the release of iOS 7, eggheads from Chitika Insights found that 52 per cent of web traffic generated by Apple mobile devices came from people using the latest software.

This adoption rate is roughly the same as that of iOS 6, which was downloaded and installed by half of iOS users within a fortnight of its launch according to Chitika's figures.

Cupertino made iOS 7 available to the world on 18 September and demand for it was so great that the fruity firm's servers reportedly began creaking under the weight of requests, causing download speeds to slow to a crawl.

Meanwhile, Apple itself would have you believe there are now 200 million devices running iOS7, with Tim Cook claiming nine million iPhone 5Ss and 5Cs were sold in the three days after the blingy iDevices' launch.

To reach its 52 per cent adoption figure, Chitika Insights analysed a sample of “millions” of North American iOS-based online ad impressions (the beancounters didn't disclose precisely how many millions were involved) to discover how many devices were using iOS 7.

The firm said: "Following iOS 7’s public release the afternoon of September 18th, adoption levels soared despite high loads on Apple’s servers. About 24 hours following the start of the public rollout, adoption reached levels above 18 per cent.

“For some competitive comparison,” Chitika's canned statement continued, “Google reports that as of September 4th, 2013, adoption of Android Jelly Bean, which was released in July 2012, comprises about 45% of the Android ecosystem. Judging by past trends, it’s likely that iOS 7 will surpass that mark very soon." ®
