Putative OEM deduplication technology supplier Permabit could be about to land some clients, if a recent analyst's note is anything to go by.

Stifel Nicolaus analyst Aaron Rakers sent a note around about private talks with Permabit CEO Tom Cook and what's happening with its Albireo deduplication technology - background here. HDS-acquired BlueArc and X-IO were known in 2011 to have licensed it.

Rakers reports Cook as saying: "The company’s technology is currently being evaluated or utilised by three of the top six flash storage array vendors…". The analyst added: "The company also noted that it is being used/evaluated with systems at four of the top six traditional storage array vendors."

Pure Storage has its own deduplication technology. About to IPO, all-flash array start-up Violin Memory could also be a possible Permabit OEM client. The Cisco-acquired Whiptail, also lacking dedupe with its flash arrays, could be another.

Don't count on this though; false dawns abound in this area. ®
