Adaptec's new 12Gbit/s SAS RoC controller packs in more than double the RAID adapter speed of its older brother.
Remember storage biz wannabe Adaptec? Its RAID adapter business was acquired by PMC-Sierra in 2010, and new generations of its RAID cards have been coming out ever since then – with Series 7 supporting 6Gbit/s SAS interfaces.
The latest Series 8 generation uses 12Gbit/s SAS RAID-on-Chip (RoC) controllers and maxCache Plus tiering technology
Adaptec says it delivers more than 700,000 4k random read RAID IOPS, a 60 per cent increase on the previous generation card set.
The maxCache Plus functionality "provides the flexibility to configure all storage devices in a server environment, not just those connected to PMC hardware. All storage assets in a server can be leveraged according to their performance capabilities with the fastest media used for data acceleration, enabling the most cost-effective storage architecture".
Adaptec's Series 5Q products offered maxCache with hybrid SSD/HDD support and copied hot or frequently read data into flash, treated as a cache. The new cards do the same.
LSI began shipping its 12gig SAS adapters in July. Its four models have four or eight ports.
The Series 8 family's five models have configurations which include 16-port adapters. These can connect any combination of SSDs and HDDs to create hybrid storage arrays. Product availability is before the end of the year. ®
