HP to offer SAP's HANA-as-a-service

Cloudy in-memory caper to kick off in Australia and New Zealand

HP has announced it will offer SAP's in-memory database HANA in as-a-service mode, an offering The Reg revealed was under discussion back in March 2013.

Details of just what is on offer are sketchy for now. HP has not made a price list available, saying only “Pricing will vary according to client need.” Nor has the company released details of the hardware that will power the service, saying only it will run on HP's converged infrastructure stack.

HP has responded to The Reg's requests for details on the above and other matters, but that response is bland PR-speak that reveals nothing.

For now all we know is that the service will first be made available in Australia and New Zealand and will be offered “either as a managed virtual private cloud or a managed private cloud, within a regionalised, enterprise-class HP data centre facility” and that the facility mentioned is the Aurora data centre on the outskirts of Sydney.

HP has also announced what it's calling “a global Migration Factory for SAP HANA to support clients who choose to fully or partially move to SAP HANA”.

Vulture South believes the "global service" is, in reality, a statement of capability after an Australian or New Zealand entity asked for it. HP has, in the process of delivering for one client, productised the service in case anyone else, anywhere else, fancies its own HANA-aas rig.

Just when Hana-as-a-service will reach the rest of the world is another unknown. HP has told The Reg it "... will provide a framework to roll-out into other markets. Further market expansion will be based on demand. HP and SAP are currently experiencing interest from several Asia Pacific and Japan markets, with roll-out expected in some of these areas as early as this year." ®
