Pinch to Xoom: Motorola settles trademark suit in confidential deal
Fondleslab name-change likely to have no effect whatsoever
Motorola has settled a trademark lawsuit in the US over the name "Xoom", and will "phase out" its use on a Googlerola fondleslab.
The Google-owned mobile device maker was sued by online payment provider Xoom Corporation on the day a tablet bearing the name Xoom was launched back in 2011 and settled the case in a confidential deal earlier this week.
According to The American Lawyer, the deal requires Motorola to stop using the Xoom name, which is unlikely to cause it any sleepless nights whatsoever.
However, when the suit was filed, Xoom was looking for "treble damages" for Motorola's "wilful and intentional conduct", so there may be a financial component to the settlement as well.
The judge's dismissal of the case said only that both parties were voluntarily ending the suit and that each would "bear its own attorneys' fees and costs".
Motorola had not returned a request for comment at the time of publication. ®
