BitTorrent's share 'n' sync tool, the prosaically-named BitTorrent Sync, has emerged from Alpha testing and is now yours to wield on the desktop and Android devices.

There's nothing new in features that allow access from those two classes of device, and not much in BitTorrent Sync that makes it stand out from Dropbox and its numerous emulators. Except, as we've noted before , the software can be installed on many network-attached storage (NAS) devices powered by Linux and capable of running apps.

Several small NAS devices offer mobile access, but most allow mobile devices to access a NAS' contents without offering the chance to write data to the array. BitTorrent says its Android app can do that.

The list of NAS that run the software isn't long and doesn't include products from top-tier storage vendors. It does, however, include devices like Synology's DS412+ that possesses certification from VMware, Citrix and Microsoft.

That opens up some interesting possibilities to capture data on mobile devices and automatically shuttle it back into the embrace of a device that talks nicely with applications. That's not something Dropbox does officially. Yet. ®
