CommVault whuppin' EMC in backup and recovery - report

IT research outfit Forrester has published an Enterprise Backup and Recovery report that shows little CommVault kicking the big backup guys' asses.
The Forrester Wave Enterprise Backup And Recovery Software, Q2 2013 report looked at six enterprise backup vendors: ASG; CommVault; EMC; HP; IBM; and Symantec.
The author, Rachel Dines, has blogged about 61 criteria used to grade suppliers.
CommVault scored an overall 4.5 out of 5 and "is in a virtual tie for top honours with competitor EMC."
The report noted:
- EMC is top dog in the strategy section, scoring highly "in corporate and product strategy and R&D investment." The Hopkinton-based company has a big backup product launch on July 10th.
- Symantec "scored high in the platform support categories, which is consistent with its strategy, as well as continuity and restore features and R&D investment."
- IBM scored well in its current offering, with strengths in deduplication, manageability, continuity, and restore features. But: "One continued weakness for IBM is its lack of integration with its hardware and services portfolio."
- HP trails behind the leader group of CommVault, EMC, IBM and Symantec. It scored well in platform support and scalability, with strong hypervisor and application capabilities, although it was unable to demonstrate all of these advanced capabilities during its product demo.
- ASG is also a contender with its Atempo acquisition.
