Australia’s Government Information Management Office (AGIMO), the nation's top technology policy body, is splitting into distinct policy and services delivery arms, after the departure of Australian Government Chief Information Officer Ann Steward led to a restructure.

Steward announced her departure from the top CIO job late last month, stating that she was retiring after 32 years in the public sector, with no heir apparent nominated.

Yesterday, AGIMO announced that in the wake of Steward’s departure, the agency will be restructured by splitting its remit in two distinct parts.

The dual dominions will be headed by Glenn Archer, who has been named the new Australian Government CIO, while the newly created role of Australian Government Chief Technology Officer has gone to John Sheridan.

Both the CIO and CTO functions will exist within the Department of Finance and Deregulation.

Archer’s CIO function will provide ICT governance and policy investment advice around information and ICT for whole of government while the CTO role taken by Sheridan will lead whole of government service delivery and support including networks, online services and ICT procurement. He will also take on the wider role of Australian Government Procurement Coordinator.

“The combination of embedding AGIMO into one of the core groups within Finance, together with the creation of the new CTO role, not only confirms the important role of ICT in the operations of government, it ensures that the ability of the AGCIO and the AGCTO to influence the future application of technology is both broader and deeper,” Archer wrote in a blog post.

The changes will take effect from 4 February 2013 with more details on resourcing changes set to follow. ®
