Google’s Nexus 4 smartphone is back on the UK Google Play store, but you’ll have to wait until the new year to get hold of one should you place an order.

The LG-made handset has been much in demand and after its launch quickly sold out. Early reports suggested the initial allocation of the secretly 4G smartphone sold out within half an hour.

That was in the second week of November. Skip forward just under a month and Google yesterday evening began taking orders again, at 5pm. Alas, eager buyers had to be quick, and once again the handsets performed their now well-known hot cake impersonation.

This morning the Sim-free 8GB Nexus 4, for which Google wants a very reasonable 239 quid, is sold out again.

“We are out of inventory. Please check back soon,” the Google site suggests.

The £279 16GB Nexus 4 is likewise unavailable, but Google indicates it will ship in “5-6 weeks”. So early to mid January 2013, in other words.

Reg readers who managed to snag one last night say their handsets are still one to two weeks away from being shipped to them. Did you fare better? Let us know in the comments.

If your home’s under a stone, you may not know that the Nexus 4 has a 4.7in, 320ppi, 768 x 1280 IPS LCD display, a Qualcomm S4 Pro processor, 2GB of Ram, an 8Mp camera and runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Officially, it offers HSPA+ 3G connectivity and 2.4GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi. ®
