Skype has introduced prepaid cards to the UK, offering shoppers the option to purchase their call credits in stores.

Top-up VoIP vouchers - available for £10 and £20 - are on the way to various retailers, including Asda, Currys, PC World, Sainsburys and WHSmith. The prepaid amounts can be put towards subscription bundles as well as general use.

Expanding options for credit replenishment could encourage greater use of the software's services, something Microsoft clearly wants following its 2011 $8.5bn acquisition of Skype, which has been heavily embedded in Windows 8.

The UK is the second area to be given Skype top-up cards after the scheme was already introduced in Mexico this summer.

Skype says other countries can expect currency-specific vouchers in the coming months. ®
