Storage specialist Seagate has joined the organisation behind the universal online movie locker service UltraViolet.

A company focusing on local storage keen to get its foot in the door of a cloud-based service? That can’t be right surely?

Don’t forget that for all Seagate’s promotion of external hard drives and network attached storage, it also makes drives for servers, and it can see how UltraViolet content providers are going to need more and more of the things each year as they add more films and TV shows to the service.

And UV does incorporate downloads, not just streamed content. So Seagate hopes to be seen, through its membership of the UV overlord the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE) company, as the first choice for extra storage to keep all those downloads on. ®
