Apple: Samsung was in 'crisis' over our iPhone awesomeness

'As if!' say the South Koreans

Apple has told a court that its iPhone put Samsung into a right tizzy and that's why the South Korean giant had to go and copy all its stuff.

The fruity firm trotted out an internal Samsung document that likened the features of the iPhone to "Heaven and Earth" and revealed Samsung staff were suffering a "crisis in design" over it, Reuters reported.

But Samsung pooh-poohed the idea that the iPhone had the whole company crapping itself. Strategy chief Justin Denison said the language of the document was hyperbole and it sounded like senior execs were just trying to jazz employees up and get them motivated.

On the first day of the second week of the tech titans' ongoing patent trial, Apple also produced a designer who had examined the iDevices and Samsung gadgets. Peter Bressler – a college professor with design experience and around 70 patents of his own – was brought out yesterday by Apple to support the theory that Samsung designers had copied some of the iPhone's features.

Samsung's lawyer, Charles Verhoeven, bogged Bressler down in the details, focusing on design features as small as the curvature of corners and encircling bezels and producing loads of visuals and real phones to prove his point.

"The overall impression that the ordinary observer would have of that design, is that they're substantially the same," Bressler said eventually.

"I do not believe they should be investigating teeny little details, one at a time."

Samsung's defence is more or less that all phones and tablets borrow from each other and it's keen to point out the differences between its Galaxy range and Apple's iDevices, no matter how small.

The trial continues in California today. ®
