Google's Chrome browser has overtaken Internet Explorer to become the world's most popular browser.

According to StatCounter's Global Stats, which calculates browser popularity on the basis of 15 billion page views a month from people all over the world with tracking code installed on over three million websites, Chrome just moved above Internet Explorer in the rankings in the last week calculated (14 to 20 May).

Chrome has danced over and under Microsoft's browser for a while now, but this is the first time the browser has topped the popularity stakes for a whole week.

Despite Chrome's global appeal, it's still lagging in the US, where IE is vastly more popular than Chrome, which takes second place, and Europe, where Firefox is the most popular and Chrome runs a close second.

It's Asia and South America, particularly the latter, that have pulled Chrome's worldwide standing up. ®
