Whoever smelt it dealt it

The scent of an unopened MacBook has been captured by a French perfume house which claims to have created a fragrance reminiscent of that accompanying the unboxing of an Apple gadget.

No, it's not for commercial use; Apple has surely patented the smell of its products anyway. It's for an art project, but considerable effort has been expended in getting the smell right.

For the uninitiated PC owners and forgetful fanbois who don't remember what their Macbook smelt like when they first slipped it out of its plastic casing, fragrance house Air Aroma has put together the scent cocktail unleashed by an unboxing. And no, it's not some combination of Foxconn employee blood and cleaning chemicals. Well, not exactly:

"A distinctive scent can be observed when unwrapping a newly purchased Apple product from its packaging. Apple fans will certainly recognise this smell. The scent created encompasses the smell of the plastic wrap covering the box, printed ink on the cardboard, the smell of paper and plastic components within the box and of course the aluminum laptop which has come straight from the factory where it was assembled in China."

No analysis of whether it really is that different to an Acer or an HP laptop.

Apparently the "fragrance designers" at Air Aroma then used a palette of fragrances with the aroma of glue, plastic, rubber and paper. Air Aroma fragrance designers then used these samples as ingredients to create a range of signature blend fragrances.

The fragrance has been sent to Australia where it will be wafted through an exhibition called Greatest Hits: A collaboration between Gavin Bell, Jarrah de Kuijer & Simon McGlinn. ®
