Websites using hosting firm 1&1 are down today while the company deals with a problem with "one of its nodes", according to some of its customers.

1&1's service status page claims that all systems are functional, but British and Spanish customers are complaining on Twitter that their websites are down or they're having issues with the control panel.

One customer told The Reg that two different engineers had told him it was a problem with a node that houses other client sites and that it was being looked into.

However, a spokesperson for 1&1 in the UK said via email that the company was "not aware of any performance issues affecting its web hosting at this time".

Some UK customers were reporting that their sites had been down since yesterday evening, but others reported noticing issues only today.

Most of the complaints on Twitter from Spanish users said that their sites had been down for around an hour, while one UK customer said their site was now back up after being out since last night.

The Spanish Twitter account for 1&1, @1&1_ES, appeared to be replying to customer complaints, but the UK account, @1and1_UK hadn't made any mention of problems or answered any queries.

One tweeter said in response to @1and1_UK's tweets:

I've noticed that when there's a problem, you guys go on a marketing and sales drive. Please fix the node problem before selling.
