Research in Motion's latest BlackBerry promotional shindig ended in bloodshed last night after a man was stabbed in the neck at the London event, which was attended by pop singer Jessie J.

Police were called to a Bankside Vaults, Southwark nightclub in Southwalk shortly after midnight after a 30-year-old man was allegedly slashed with a broken bottle after an argument broke out.

A Scotland Yard spokesman today said a 25-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the attack. Meanwhile, the victim is being treated in an east London hospital. His condition was said to be "serious".

The event held was to promote BlackBerry's instant messaging service, BBM, popular with BlackBerry-packing yoof.

That's a market the the manufacturer is increasingly associated with. Among UK consumers with a household income of over £40,000, RIM's handset brand ranks in ninth place behind Apple, Android, Samsung, Nokia and others, according to pollster YouGov's BrandIndex.

To reverse this trend, RIM last week announced it would now focus on its core corporate userbase and hinted it would abandon the consumer market, a move it quickly denied.

But perhaps RIM really should turn its attentions to the juvenile consumer market, rather than focus on the business end. ®
