BSkyB chairman James Murdoch is reportedly stepping down from his role.

The company declined to comment on the news story that was "broken" by Sky News, an organisation owned by BSkyB.

According to that report James Murdoch - the son of media tycoon Rupert Murdoch - will quit the chairman role this afternoon. His decision to quit BSkyB follows on from his departure in February from his dad's British newspaper business - News International.

Murdoch junior has been under intense scrutiny after a number of journalists within News International faced allegations of phone-hacking and illegal payments to police.

He's expected to hand his resignation to BSkyB board members this afternoon and will step down with immediate effect, Sky News reported. Murdoch junior will remain as a non-exec director of the company. BSkyB's deputy chairman, Nicholas Ferguson, will replace him. ®
