Twitter has bought the microblogging service Posterous and will be running it as an adjunct to its main client – for the time being, at least.

"This team has built an innovative product that makes sharing across the web and mobile devices simple – a goal we share," said Twitter in a statement. "Posterous engineers, product managers and others will join our teams working on several key initiatives that will make Twitter even better."

Posterous began life in 2008, and is a simple system that allows users to blog information from a variety of sources. The company has been putting its content up on search engines to drive traffic, but never really took off among consumers. There were persistent rumors that Twitter was going to buy the service last year, but the deal has only now been confirmed.

"The opportunities in front of Twitter are exciting," said Posterous founder Sachin Argawal on the Posterous blog, "and we couldn't be happier about bringing our team's expertise to a product that reaches hundreds of millions of users around the globe. Plus, the people at Twitter are genuinely nice folks who share our vision for making sharing simpler."

Posterous' main Spaces product will remain in operation as a separate service, Twitter said, and users will be fully informed ahead of time if that changes, and allowed to shift their data.

The terms of the deal have not been disclosed. ®
