Telcos 'need clarity'

Telstra CEO David Thodey has told journalists and analysts that the telecommunications industry “needs clarity” following the Federal Court decision which clearly and simply said “Optus TV Now is legal”.

In other words, since the clarity provided by the Federal Court is not the clarity Telstra wants – with $AU153 million committed to the Australian Football League.

Thodey welcomed the Australian government’s Copyright Review process – which possibly hints that he may be distancing himself from those who are more hysterically calling for the Federal Court’s decision to be reversed by legislation even before it reaches the High Court.

Thodey made his remarks after announcing Telstra’s financial results, which included a rise in first-half profit by 23 percent to $AU1.5 billion, still below the expectations of brain donors market analysts, thereby causing Telstra shares to fall.

Fixed broadband retail customers also rose, offsetting a fall in fixed broadband wholesale customers. ®

The Register will take a more detailed look at Telstra’s financials after we’ve had time to absorb more depth than merely the press release. ®
