Update: Chinese electronics giant Huawei could be set to launch its P1 as early as next month, according to reports.

Huawei senior vice president Yu Chengdong took to Twitter-like service Sina Weibo to reveal that the first devices could be on sale in China by the end of March, according to Tech Sina (Chinese) – although the exec appeared to believe it was the P1's slimmer sister, the P1 S, that was being launched. However, Huawei has since announced that the Ascend P1 S will only be shipped in the second half of 2012.

Huawei contacted The Register to set the record straight. A company spokesperson told El Reg:

  • For China, the Huawei Ascend P1 will be ready for shipment by the end of March.
  • The Huawei Ascend P1 is expected to be on sale in Q3, 2012 in Europe and the US, and the availability of Ascend P1 S in both markets is scheduled for the latter part of 2012.

The Ascend P1 S was debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last month and Huawei originally said it would be available worldwide from April.

The Chinese giant’s iPhone-killer made quite a stir at CES with its super-skinny 6.48mm (0.255 inch) frame. The device will also feature Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and is powered by a dual-core Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 Cortex-A9 processor running at 1.5GHz, alongide an SGX 540 graphics engine.

A 4.3-inch, 960-by-540 Super AOLED qHD display is protected by hardened Gorilla Glass and there is a broad range of UMTS/GSM 3G and HSPA+ 4G connectivity capabilities, according to the firm.

Its 1670 mAh battery is said to provide up to 30 per cent more battery life over its rivals and the handset even comes in cherry blossom pink. Ahhh. ®
