Crystal trips

Raspberry Pi won't make it into buyers' hands before 20 February and perhaps not until the end of the month, the organisation behind the $25 microcomputer has admitted.

The compact yet fully laden motherboard went into mass production early in January. The hope was the gadget would be available to buyers by now.

Alas not. Raspberry Pi's contract manufacturer "had some trouble sourcing a specific component", the firm blogged this week. The result: manufacturing is "taking a little longer than we’d hoped".

Says the blog: "The quartz crystal package we had chosen when we thought we were manufacturing in the UK is readily available over here in Europe.

"But it turns out that in China, that crystal package has been overtaken in price and size by a smaller, cheaper one, so the one we’d designed for has been a bit hard to find."

The boards will now be finished on 20 February, before arriving in the UK and shipping to buyers "before the end of the month". ®
