Quickflix’s move to digital streaming in December has sparked 10 percent of its subscribers to choose streaming as part of their package.

The IPTV aspirant reported that it was experiencing overall strong growth with the number of total subscribers, including trialists, reaching 110,697 by the end of 2011. This represents an increase of 21,303 or 24 percent during the December quarter.

Paying subscribers totalled 94,097 at the end of December, representing net additions of 13,464 or growth of 17 percent for the quarter.

Quickflix reports that paying subscribers have grown 81 percent for the year to December.

Quickflix launched its movie streaming service via Sony Playstation devices on December 22nd. The December Sony deal is an extension of an earlier agreement signed in July to begin streaming content via the Sony Bravia connected TV platform.

The PS3 distribution channel will give Quickflix access to a million gamers who are be able to subscribe to the Quickflix service via a branded "smart channel".

While the company is making quarterly gains in subscriber numbers it is still a long way off its targeted customer base of one million customers within five years .

However stock analysts and brokers Baillieu Research noted in their October report on Quickflix Stockbroking that should Quickflix reach the 100,000 milestone, it will be easier for the company to secure distribution deals.

The report forecast that following the launch of its streaming business, Quickflix would have between 1.1 million and 4.0 million devices on which consumers would be able to watch Quickflix movies. While by 2017, the number of addressable devices is conservatively estimated at between 5.8 and 15 million.

Quickflix is also preparing availability for its IPTV streaming service across PCs/Macs, iPads and iPhones.

“The business model being pursued by Quickflix will enable a subscription streaming service through to three devices simultaneously and connections to up to seven or eight devices to access the service – at no additional fee. While this facilitates receiving the streaming services across multiple platforms and therefore consumers getting “what they want when they want it”, to remain competitive with Telstra’s T-Box QFX will need to provide consumers with a very compelling pricing structure,” the report warns. ®
