BT's Openreach wing plans to deploy its fibre technology to a further 178 exchanges, the national telco confirmed today.

It said that the majority of those exchanges would be upgraded in 2012.

Once that work is complete, around 1.8 million homes and businesses will have access to BT's fibre-to-the-cabinet or fibre-to-the-premises technology.

“We continue to make tremendous strides with our fibre programme. Super-fast broadband is already within reach of more than six million premises today and we are on track to pass ten million premises next year," said Openreach boss Liv Garfield.

“Our ambitions do not stop there. We will make fibre available to two thirds of UK premises by the end of 2014 and we want to go even further.

"It is important that as many premises as possible have access to fibre and so we will bid for the BDUK [Broadband Delivery UK] funds that are available."

The company said that 34 exchanges in Scotland, and 16 exchanges in Wales would be upgraded.

BT, which has previously said it would double its current broadband speed of "up to" 40Mbit/s next year, also announced that "certain locations" would be offered speeds of "up to" 300Mbit/s in spring 2012.

The Register asked BT what parts of the UK would be able to gain access to those speeds, but the telco didn't get back to us with comment at time of writing.
