Small biz owners plan for stingy Xmas celebrations

Workers forced to pull their own cracker

More than half of small biz owners are cancelling Christmas – well the annual festive lunch to be specific – as cash is in short supply.

This is according to research by the Forum of Private Business, which states a new wave of Scrooges have emerged in the current climate who are unwilling to shower staff with cheap wine and turkey this year.

However, not-for-profit organ FBP says that this decision could alienate workers who have "more than likely" worked hard in a challenging 2011.

“The benefits of an annual get-together cannot be underestimated," said FPB chief exec Phil Orford.

"They encourage communication, motivate staff, and reward them at a time when other perks, such as pay rises and bonuses for many just aren't an option.”

Office Christmas parties can also be a breeding ground for drunken fights as animosity that built throughout the year erupts over the pudding or for heavy petting where amorous co-workers make exchanges below the holly.

FPB has come with up a 10-point plan including asking staff what they want to do with a reduced budget, hosting a low-key affair, making your own entertainment, using discount websites and organising a secret Santa. ®
