Ciena picks up AAPT network build
Ethernet business services in the pipeline
TNZ-owned AAPT has announced that it will be deploying kit from Ciena to support an upgrade to its carrier Ethernet services.
The carrier says it expects growing demand for high-capacity business Ethernet services, particularly as the National Broadband Network rolls out. Its new deployment will also be available to other retailers, with the company saying its network “will be scalable to terabit-level capacities, providing reliable Ethernet private line and wide area LAN services to retail service providers”.
The deployment comes in the context of AAPT’s stated intention to expand its network to service NBN points of interconnect (POIs), the service aggregation points. Retailers connecting customers on the NBN will need wholesale capacity providers to deliver traffic from the POIs back to their own networks.
It nominated the streaming video, cloud computing, B2B commerce and wireless backhaul markets as requiring access to the high-bandwidth and low latency services targeted by carrier Ethernet services.
The network upgrade will use Ciena’s 5410 and 5150 aggregation switches to augment its existing IP/MPLS core network. End users will be offered services at speeds up to 10 Gbps protected. ®
