While we're waiting for flexible, flat, multi-cavity plasma array light bulbs to hit the market, Samsung has started selling advanced LED bulbs in the US that could last years.

The bulbs, which Samsung hopes Americans will be using in their homes instead of incandescent, halogen and CFL bulbs, are inspired by the South Korean firm's work in LED televisions, according to Kevin Dexter, senior VP of home appliances.

"A light bulb is no longer just a light bulb. It's a digital technology made up of LED chips, drivers and electronics - familiar turf for Samsung," he said in a canned statement.

The US will be getting A19, PAR and MR16 bulbs to start out, all of which can last between 27 and 36 years based on usage of around three hours a day, which is good because they can set you back a bit.

The A19 is a directional bulb that can be used in lamps, vanity lights and wall sconces, it's dimmable and Samsung are pricing it at $19.98.

The PAR bulbs on the other hand, can cost as much as $59.98 for the 1100 lumen, 75W version. These lights are also dimmable and are made to replace halogen bulbs in track or recessed lighting.

Finally, MR16s are also good for track and recessed lighting, as well as vanity lights and the 20W version will save over $70 in energy costs over its lifetime. ®
