Internode adds Darwin POP
Expanded Oz backhaul makes far north feasible

The expansion of Australia’s backhaul networks is paying off for Darwin residents, with ISP Internode announcing that it’s going to add its own POP in the country’s northernmost state capital.
The company says its Darwin POP will be switched on early in 2012.
Darwin’s remoteness from the rest of the country, and its historical lack of backhaul competition, has resulted in very limited broadband competition in the city, since anybody building DSL networks in the city could only buy their backhaul links from Telstra.
However, the rollout of the regional backhaul network being built by Nextgen Networks under government assistance (the Regional Backhaul Blackspots Program) is changing the landscape in Darwin.
Internode’s Simon Hackett said the combination of a local POP with Nextgen’s backhaul will deliver lower prices and higher speeds to the company’s Darwin customers.
Internode already has ten POPs covering Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, Hobart and Brisbane.
The company had already landed its own DSLAMs in Alice Springs, and has installed DSLAMs in four Darwin exchanges, which it says will be switched on as soon as Nextgen completes its links to Brisbane and Adelaide. Those links are due for completion during December.
As well as ADSL2+ services, the company says it will be building out SHDSL services in Darwin able to offer business customers up to 40 Mbps symmetrical. ®
