Australian-made iOS app darling Filter Squad has hit one million downloads for its Discovr app and has promptly closed $1.1m in seed funding.

Discovr is essentially a smart recommendation engine that allows you to find music based on your existing field of preferences.

Discovr is currently a number one app in 28 countries and the app’s success is surprisingly being driven from Japan, rather than the US or Australia.

The company has also released a desktop app following consumer demand.

The company originally received a $200,000 seed round from Perth-based VC firm Yuuwa in January, when the app was first launched, and it extended the gesture in the latest round.

“We use a combination of machines and humans to develop our recommendations," says founder and CEO David McKinney. "We have a heap of deep machine technology combined with a human curation layer on top and this approach gives us the ability to provide great recommendations for all kinds of apps." ®
