Tech world supremos Larry Page, Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, Michael Dell and Apple's Tim Cook and Scott Forstall made an appearance at the secret memorial for Steve Jobs held in Stanford University yesterday.

U2's Bono, media baron Rupert Murdoch and, er, Stephen Fry were also in attendance.

The ceremony in the Stanford chapel was private and heavily guarded, with steel barriers erected around the edges of the college. Security guards turned away media and reporters, while passersby who inquired about the service were told that the area would be closed for six to eight hours for a private event. Apparently Page was initially refused entry because he forgot his invitation.

More traditionally a Microsoft university, Stanford is the alma mater of Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and boasts a $38m computer facility sponsored by Bill Gates. But the institution is also where Jobs made his oft-quoted "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish" commencement speech, and where a teenage Jobs used to informally attend lectures on the campus. 16 October has been declared Steve Jobs day in California.

Stephen Fry tweeted: "I don't know that there was ever a more beautiful memorial service." ®
