Optus has partnered with innovation hub NICTA in an open call for undergraduate mobile app developers.

Launching the “Unleash your App” competition, the duo is looking for students to develop a socially enriching Android mobile app across six targeted application areas.

The winner's app will be sold and promoted on the Optus App store, and receive a AUD$5,000 cash prize and a Samsung Galaxy S II Android smartphone. The first two runners-up will also receive generous cash prizes and smartphones.

Optus is ramping up its support of the Android platform which is expected to account for half of the worldwide smartphone market by 2012 and drive new app revenue.

“There is a thriving mobile developer community out there as smartphones and tablets become entrenched in our lives. We’ve joined forces with leading research institute, NICTA, to uncover the hidden talent and mobile innovation among our university students, and hope that this competition will inspire them to turn their great ideas into reality,” said Austin Bryan, Director of Optus Digital Media.

Entries must be commercially viable and developed on an Android platform and will be judged on their uniqueness and innovation. The competition categories include: health and education, social networking, utilities, news and entertainment, productivity and lifestyle. ®
