Mobile phone app downloads are forecast to reach 14 billion in the Asia Pacific by 2016 with revenues of $US2.2 billion, according to the latest research from Ovum.

The Asia Pac app market will hit 5 billion downloads by the end of the year with revenues from mobile phone apps poised to reach $US871 million. This compares to 1.6 billion apps downloaded in 2010 and revenues of $US 302 million. In the predicted growth surge, Ovum devices analyst Nick Dillon also forecasts that Android will usurp Apple in the app dominance stakes. The Asia Pacific market will be fertile ground for Android with predictions of 1.8 billion downloads versus Apple’s 1.5 billion in 2011. Last year Android reported 244 million downloads and Apple 424 million in the region.

By 2016 Ovum forecast that there will be almost double the total number of Android phone application downloads compared to iPhone in the Asia Pacific, with 6.07 billion and 3.4 billion respectively.

“But although Android phones will lead on total download numbers, iPhone will continue to dominate the Asia Pacific market in terms of revenues from paid-for apps, reaching $US808 million in 2016, compared to $US394 million for Android,” Dillion said.

In other emerging trends the Windows Phone operating system will gain ground overtaking BlackBerry for third place in both total number of downloads and revenues by 2015. ®
