The Independent Police Complaints Commission has opened an investigation into allegations that a Surrey cop leaked information about the probe into Milly Dowler's murder in 2002 to the News of the World.

"An IPCC Deputy Senior Investigator has been over at Surrey Police this morning to get more information about the case and will be writing to the Dowlers' solicitor at the family's request," said the Commission in a statement issued this afternoon.

"Until we have shared further detail with him it would not be appropriate for us to make it public."

The IPCC said it had received a voluntary referral from Surrey Police about the allegation.

Thirteen-year-old Milly Dowler was murdered in 2002, after disappearing from school in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey.

Levi Bellfield, a doorman, was convicted of her murder in June this year.

News International-owned Sunday tabloid News of the World was closed down for good last month, after its company was swamped with allegations of widespread illegal phone-tapping at the paper. ®
