Australia could soon be suffering a case of “too many cloud providers”, with another two companies entering an already-crowded market.

Earlier this week, the Digital Realty Trust opened its doors downunder, and today, Cloud Sherpas, which first came to antipodean attention with its acquisition of New Zealand’s WaveAdept earlier this month.

Digital Realty Trust is a data centre builder with a focus on turnkey data centres, data centre pods, and technical real estate. The company has kicked off its Australian presence with the acquisition of a 3.48 hectare development site in Erskine Park, in western Sydney.

It says it will start building its planned 9,300 square meter, 11.5 megawatt first phase later this year, on a site that can support double the phase one space. The site can support up to four 1440 kW turnkey pods, Digital Realty Trust says.

At the application services end of the cloud market, Cloud Sherpas says its entry into the Australian market, with an office opening today under a subsidiary registered in June, will target the burgeoning Google Apps segment.

Its local operations will provide Google Apps deployment specialists into Australia, New Zealand, and ultimately the fast-growing Asia Pacific market.

While Cloud Sherpas builds its Australian staff, the office here will be headed by co-founder and VP of business development, Eran Gil. ®
