RIM is to cut more than 2,000 jobs around the world as part of the cost-reduction strategy it announced last month. The layoffs will leave around 17,000 employed by the company.

RIM explains the process is about "eliminating redundancies and reallocating resources" which requires "workforce reduction" to the tune of 2,000 people. The company explains that this follows huge expansion over the last four years, which saw the number of staff multiply almost four times.

People in North America facing the chop will be notified this week, while employees in the rest of the world will have to wait while their local offices check out laws on notification and severance pay.

The cost of all that severance pay will come out in the next quarter results, scheduled for September. ®
