The BBC will broadcast the 2011 Wimbledon tennis tournament finals in 3D.

The two singles finals will be broadcast in 3D on Saturday, 2 July and Sunday, 3 July through Freeview, Freesat, Virgin and Sky, all of which show BBC HD.

Viewers will need a 3D TV, of course, but seemingly no special reception hardware. Don't have a suitable telly? Then watch the tournament in 2D on BBC One HD, the Corporation said.

The 3D footage is being shot by Sony in co-operation with the BBC - a partnership announced in February, though at the time it wasn't revealed that Auntie would also be broadcasting any of the matches itself.

The BBC described the Wimbledon broadcast as "one of a small number of 3D TV editorial experiments" it is undertaking to test the tech and gauge demand for it.

The Corporation has said it won't establish a 3D channel until mid-2012 at the earliest, if at all. ®
