Software licensing, virtualisation and the cloud

Survey time, folks

Tech Panel If you've got a few minutes to spare, let us know your thoughts on the software licensing models you use today and whether you believe they restrict your ability to serve your users. You can get started by clicking here.

This is the rationale for our study, which we will publish in The Register in a few weeks.

For most organisations, software licensing models are actively considered only when solutions are bought, or support and maintenance contracts are renewed.

We also know from research that Register readers frequently report gaps in software asset management within their organisation. This is increasingly becoming a problem with the advent of virtualisation, 'cloud' and the way in which IT infrastructure is generally becoming more 'fluid' or 'dynamic'.

As hardware gets decoupled from software, and things move around a lot more, sometimes even between hosted and on site domains, legal compliance is becoming more complex. As importantly, optimising software usage and license arrangements to minimise cost appears to be more of an art than a science at the moment.

Against this background, we are sure you have some views.
