Microblogging service Twitter has reportedly purchased Tweetdeck, a client platform popular among Tweeters, for $40m. The deal has not yet been confirmed by the companies, but CNN – without naming its sources – reports that papers were signed yesterday.

Speculation regarding a deal had been rife for weeks. The reported price of $40m for Tweetdeck is towards the low end of the expected range: some analysts had considered that it might sell for $50m.

Twitter has made other acquisitions in recent times aimed at bringing more of its large userbase more firmly inside its tent. The firm bought in Tweetie last year, so getting the iPhone fanbois, and has partnered with the popular add-on TwitPic.

Back in February it was reported that UberMedia, which owns other Twitter apps, might buy Tweetdeck, but the deal was never finalised. At the same time Twitter denied access to UberMedia apps UberTwitter and twidroyd, saying that there had been policy violations. ®
