Identity and Passport Service loses its website

Tentacle reabsorbed by Home Office

The Identity and Passport Service disappeared this morning – it has been absorbed into the Home Office's main site.

We're guessing that without the dribbling stream of applications for ID cards from friends and relatives of Home Office staffers, there's less need for a standalone site.

History fans can rest easy; the site has been archived here.

A statement on the site says: "It is the government's intention to reduce the number of websites to provide cost savings and improved access to government information, departments and their services. To this end, Identity and Passport Service (IPS) content has been integrated into the Home Office's website."

For all your passport and immigration queries go to this page of the main Home Office site.

Hat-tip to Steven/SA from the Guardian Government Computing site for the spot. ®
