Sony joins car-smartphone tech team
Mobiles to meet automobiles
Sony has joined the Car Connectivity Consortium - a band of phone and car companies dedicated to connecting phones to cars.
The CCC was formed in March and already numbers Nokia, Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Alpine, Daimler, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Toyota and VW among its members.
All of them are developing - or will promote - a system to present on a dashboard display apps running on a connected - by USB, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi - smartphone. Think of the car's screen as a thin client for the phone.
Touchscreen taps and signals from other controls - buttons on the steering wheel, say - are fed back to the handset. Calls can be routed to a handsfree too.
The first commercial products based on CCC tech are expected later this year. ®
