German cops are investigating whether a 20-year-old may have been doing a tad over the 50 mph speed limit when he pranged his dad's £275k, 225 mph Gumpert Apollo.

The driver failed to negotiate a bend near the town of Brokdorf, 50 miles north of Hamburg. He and his 19-year-old female passenger walked away from the crash with minor injuries, although the motor was a bit the worse for wear.

A police officer explained: "The car is a total loss – only the passenger cabin remained virtually intact."

The Gumpert Apollo packs a V8 power plant which "catapults its pilot from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 3.0 seconds and only requires 8.9 seconds to get from 0 to 200 km/h (0-124 mph)", as the manufacturer explains. ®
