O2 has said Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play smartphone - aka the PlayStation phone - is ready to go on sale.... nearly.

The UK network operator was to have joined other carriers and launch the handset on 1 April. At the eleventh hour, however, O2 admitted its testing had revealed bugs in the SE firmware and its participation in the launch was cancelled.

Vodafone also pulled out, for the same reason.

Yesterday, O2's chief tester, Stuart Hibberd, said that new SE software "has fixed a lot of the bugs that would have stopped our customers having a great experience when they use the Play".

But not all of them.

Good though the update is, the best Hibberd could say about the phone is that it is now "nearly ready to go on sale".

Hopefully, revised code from SE will sort out the few remaining issues highlighted by Hibberd's testing team. ®
