Spanish police yesterday swiftly arrested a man who stands accused of murdering his wife and then showing the body to his father in Romania via webcam.

According to El Mundo, the father immediately called Romanian police, who in turn alerted their Spanish counterparts. Just 45 minutes later, 21-year-old "DM" was detained at his flat in Torrejón de Ardoz, outside Madrid.

The young man allegedly strangled his wife, 19-year-old "VM", who was five months' pregnant, and according to El Mundo, told his dad that when VM's 13-year-old sister returned from school, she'd "suffer the same fate".

The police arrived at the couple's place just minutes after the sister arrived home. The teenager apparently told police that her brother-in-law had told her that her sister was "sleeping". Officers also discovered the couple's three-year-old daughter unhurt in the flat.

The victim's mother, also resident in Spain, has taken custody of both children. She couldn't offer a possible motive for the killing, but said son-in-law was "ill" and should have gone to a doctor some time ago.

Police believe the most likely cause of the murder was an argument prompted by the victim telling her husband she wanted a separation and that the child she was expecting wasn't his. ®
